not allow posters to be put up, as I had heard had been done the day before, or official delegates sent down by the Canton Govern- -ment, or public subscriptions started to aid the Revolution and

so on..

My remarks were throughout received with

obvious pleasure and concurrence.

Dr. Ho Kai (M.L.C.) then rose and made a long speech. He explained that he had been elected to the Committee but understanding that its objects were comercial, and the re-establishment of trade he had erased his name as he

was not a Commercial man. He had told them euphatically that they had no business to carry into effect, or even to discuss politic- -al matters without consulting me. That my sympathy with the Chinese was so well known that they need have no hesitation in

doing so.

Mr. Lau Chu Pak then rose to explain his position as Chairman of the Comittee. Hongkong Merchants he said

had suffered enormous loss owing to the events at Canton. The meeting was convened by the Commercial Union and he attended thinking it was purely comercial. They voted him to the Chair, because the Chairman of the Union pointed out that there were

many at the meeting who did not belong to the Union and there- -fore he had no right to preside. He understood that he was only elected for the purposes of that one meeting. Their object was to ascertain how affairs were going on at Canton and how trade could be revived. Their relatives there were in danger and

bankruptcy threatened at the New Year settling day. Later he was told that he was elected Unairmen of the Committee. He ascertain-

-ed that Dr. ilo Kai would not accept because he was not a commercial an therefore he accepted thinking it better that a man like himself should be Chairman who would keep the Registrar- -General informed of all that went on, than that it should be
